From summer into early autumn, upright stems carry dense spikes of purplish-pink flowers that look good for weeks. It is a favourite of naturalistic and prairie-style planting, and works well at the front or middle of a border, in drifts with grasses, or in cottage gardens.

Grow in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil; it dislikes winter wet but is otherwise easy and very hardy.
