Tradescantia andersoniana 'Bärbel' - 2026

Tradescantia andersoniana 'Bärbel' is a compact, clump-forming perennial with narrow, arching green leaves and a profusion of vivid pink flowers each with contrasting yellow stamens. Individual blooms open for a day but are produced continuously from early summer through to early autumn, giving a long, airy display that lifts the front of mixed borders, pond edges and container schemes. The neat, grassy habit and upright, wiry stems create a light, informal texture that pairs well with larger-leaved companions and late-summer perennials.

Easy to grow and reliably floriferous, 'Bärbel' prefers full sun to partial shade and moist but well-drained soil; it will tolerate heavier ground if not waterlogged. Its open, nectar-rich flowers are much visited by bees and other pollinators, adding ecological value to the garden. Low-maintenance once established, occasional trimming after the main flush of bloom keeps the clumps tidy and encourages fresh growth. Non-native to the UK, it is prized for its long season of colour and versatility.
