Trollius europaeus - 2026

Trollius europaeus is a native herbaceous perennial known as the common globeflower. It forms clumps of deeply divided, toothed green foliage and bears spherical or shallow bowl-shaped lemon-yellow flowers in late spring to early summer. The blooms sit on erect, hollow stems above the foliage, and the petals (actually sepals) enclose much smaller nectary petals, giving the flower its globe-like appearance. In cooler, moist conditions, the plant’s vivid blooms contrast beautifully with lush foliage, making it attractive in wildflower meadows, pond edges, damp grasslands or mixed perennial borders.

Ecologically, Trollius europaeus is valuable for pollinators, offering pollen and nectar early in the season. It thrives in rich, moist soil that remains consistently damp but not waterlogged, and tolerates full sun to partial shade (in hotter sites partial shade is beneficial). It is hardy in the UK and often occurs in upland or cooler regions. The plant benefits from cutting back spent heads after flowering and dividing every few years if needed to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.
