In its second summer a tall, white-woolly flower spike up to 2m rises from the rosette, studded with saucer-shaped, lemon-yellow flowers. It makes a bold vertical accent in gravel gardens, dry sunny borders and cottage gardens.

Grow in full sun in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soil, ideally neutral to alkaline; it is drought tolerant and fully hardy, but dislikes winter wet. It is a biennial or short-lived perennial that usually dies after flowering, though it often self-seeds. Check for mullein moth caterpillars in early summer.
