Spikes rise from a rosette of hairy, grey-green leaves through summer. It adds height and a relaxed, cottage-garden feel to sunny borders and gravel gardens, and the spikes can be cut for vases.

Grow in full sun in well-drained, preferably alkaline soil; it copes with poor, stony ground and drought and is fully hardy. It can be short-lived, so allow a few plants to self-seed. Remove faded spikes to encourage more flowers. Watch for mullein moth caterpillars in early summer. The flowers attract bees.
