In late spring and early summer it is covered in bright yellow, open flowers about 1.5cm across. It makes excellent ground cover for shady banks, woodland edges, and beneath shrubs and roses.

Grow in partial or full shade in almost any soil that does not dry out completely; it is extremely hardy and generally pest and disease free. It spreads steadily by rhizomes and can be vigorous, so give it room or edge it. No pruning is needed beyond tidying in spring. Divide in early spring. Bees visit the flowers.
