Key Points
James Grieve, a popular dual-purpose apple variety, originated in Scotland in the late 19th century during the Victorian apple development era. Harvested in early-mid September, it starts pleasantly acidic and refreshing, suitable for eating or cooking. As it matures over a few weeks, the flavour sweetens, becoming mild and ideal for slicing with a cheese course. The flesh is soft, resembling a firm pear in texture. A 'sport' known as Red James Grieve, a natural genetic mutation, features the same shape and size but with a more solid red flush, showcasing the variety's aesthetic appeal.
James Grieve, with its handsome appearance and slight satin sheen, has spawned several successful varieties like Greensleeves, Lord Lambourne, Elton Beauty, and Katy. These varieties inherit James Grieve's inherent acidity, adding a refreshing kick to their flavour. Lord Lambourne, in particular, has further contributed to breeding programs, creating 'grandchildren' like Topaz.
Noteworthy for its juiciness, James Grieve's glistening flesh makes it an excellent choice for homemade apple juice. Its acid content, a valuable trait for flavour enhancement, has positioned James Grieve as a foundational variety in breeding programs, contributing to the development of subsequent successful apples. This mid-season gem, with its enduring popularity and versatile characteristics, remains a key player in the rich tapestry of apple varieties.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
At Lincs Plants, we operate from two main locations. When you place an order, we prepare and pack plants across both sites depending on what you’ve ordered.

We have five collections a day, so orders can leave throughout the day as soon as they’re ready.
