This cultivar is renowned for its profusion of small, double, button-like flowers that resemble tiny pearls, creating a soft, elegant display during the summer months.
Description
Achillea ptarmica 'The Pearl' grows to a height of 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) with a spread of approximately 30–45 cm (12–18 inches). It features fine, lance-shaped, dark green leaves that provide a feathery texture and complement the plant's airy appearance.
From early to late summer (June to August), the plant produces clusters of pure white, double flowers that appear almost like miniature roses. These blooms are held on slender, wiry stems that sway gracefully in the breeze, creating a dynamic yet subtle movement in the garden.
Growing Conditions
Achillea ptarmica 'The Pearl' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. While it tolerates a range of soil types, it performs best in moderately fertile, moist but well-draining soils.
This plant is hardy in the UK, tolerating frost and cooler climates. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and relatively low-maintenance, making it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking easy-care perennials.
Propagation and Care
Achillea ptarmica 'The Pearl' is typically propagated by division or seed. Division is best carried out in early spring or autumn. To propagate, lift the clumps, divide them into smaller sections, and replant them in prepared soil.
Routine care includes:
- Deadheading spent blooms to encourage prolonged flowering and maintain tidiness.
- Cutting back the foliage to ground level in autumn after flowering to prepare the plant for winter dormancy.
- Regular watering during dry spells, especially in the first year after planting.
Uses
Ornamental:
Achillea ptarmica 'The Pearl' is a versatile addition to cottage gardens, herbaceous borders, and wildlife-friendly planting schemes. Its soft white flowers pair beautifully with colourful perennials like Rudbeckia, Echinacea, and Lavender, creating a harmonious contrast.
Cut Flowers:
The delicate blooms are excellent for fresh arrangements or dried floral displays. Their longevity in a vase makes them a popular choice among florists and garden enthusiasts.
Naturalized Planting:
This Achillea is well-suited for naturalizing in meadows, woodland edges, or wildflower gardens, where its understated beauty blends seamlessly into informal settings.
Ecological Value
Achillea ptarmica 'The Pearl' attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies, providing a valuable nectar source throughout its blooming period. Its fine foliage also offers shelter for small garden insects and contributes to biodiversity in wildlife-friendly gardens.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Although drought-tolerant, consistent moisture improves flowering and overall health. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
- Spread Management: This cultivar may spread via rhizomes. Regular division helps manage its growth and prevents overcrowding.
- Frost Hardy: Completely hardy in temperate regions, requiring no special winter protection.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
