Key Points
Camassia leichtlinii ‘Alba’, commonly known as White Camass, is a graceful and elegant perennial known for its tall spikes of pure white, star-shaped flowers. Native to North America, this plant is an excellent addition to gardens, particularly in moist or woodland settings, offering beauty and ecological value.
Description
Camassia leichtlinii ‘Alba’ grows to a height of 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) with a spread of 30–45 cm (12–18 inches). The plant features long, narrow leaves that form a basal rosette, providing a lush green backdrop to the flowers.
In late spring to early summer (May to June), tall stems emerge, bearing spikes of large, white, star-shaped flowers. These elegant blooms are arranged in loose, pyramidal clusters, creating a soft, airy display. The flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, particularly bees.
Growing Conditions
Camassia leichtlinii ‘Alba’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is well-suited to areas with consistently moist, humus-rich soil, such as meadows, wetland gardens, or the edges of ponds. This species tolerates a variety of soil types, including loam and clay, and benefits from a consistent moisture supply during the growing season.
Hardy in the UK, this plant is frost-tolerant and grows well in temperate climates.
Propagation and Care
Camassia leichtlinii ‘Alba’ can be propagated by division or from seed:
- Division: After flowering and once the leaves have died back, lift and divide the bulbs in late summer or early autumn. Replant them immediately at the same depth to ensure healthy growth.
- Seed: Sow seeds in late autumn or early spring in well-drained, moist soil. However, it can take several years for the plant to mature and flower from seed.
Routine care includes:
- Regular watering, especially during dry spells, to maintain consistent moisture levels.
- Allowing the plant to die back naturally in autumn so the bulbs can store energy for the next growing season.
- Mulching in autumn to protect the bulbs from harsh winter conditions.
Uses
Ornamental:
Camassia leichtlinii ‘Alba’ is an excellent choice for adding vertical interest to garden borders, meadows, or cottage gardens. Its elegant white flowers make a beautiful contrast with spring perennials like Tulips, Daffodils, and Alliums.
Naturalized Planting:
This plant is ideal for naturalizing in moist areas, such as wildflower meadows, pond edges, or wetland gardens, where it can spread into lovely clusters of white blooms.
Ecological Value:
The flowers attract bees and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. Its ability to thrive in wet areas also makes it a good choice for water-adjacent plantings.
Ecological Value
Camassia leichtlinii ‘Alba’ supports pollinators by providing a nectar source for bees and other insects. Its flowers also contribute to biodiversity by offering food for various pollinating species during late spring and early summer.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is key for healthy growth. Ensure the soil remains moist, especially during the blooming period.
- Toxicity: The bulbs are mildly toxic if ingested, so care should be taken when planting near pets or small children.
- Spread: While not invasive, Camassia leichtlinii ‘Alba’ can naturalize and spread through seed if left to self-seed.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
