Iris kaempferi ‘Variegata’
Iris kaempferi ‘Variegata’, a cultivar of Japanese Iris, is renowned for its elegant variegated foliage and striking blooms. This water-loving perennial adds year-round interest to gardens with its distinctive foliage and vibrant flowers, making it an excellent choice for pond edges, bog gardens, or moist borders.
Description
- Height: 90–120 cm (36–48 inches)
- Spread: 45–60 cm (18–24 inches)
- Foliage: The standout feature of ‘Variegata’ is its vibrant, sword-like green leaves with bold creamy-white or yellow variegation along the edges. The foliage maintains its ornamental appeal throughout the growing season, adding texture and contrast even when the plant is not in bloom.
- Flowers: The blooms are large, flat, and ruffled, measuring up to 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) in diameter. They are typically shades of purple or violet with intricate veining and a bright yellow signal at the center. The flowers appear in midsummer (June to July), creating a stunning display above the variegated foliage.
Growing Conditions
Iris kaempferi ‘Variegata’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires consistently moist, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It is particularly well-suited for wet environments, such as pond edges, bog gardens, or shallow water up to 10 cm (4 inches) deep.
- Soil: Rich, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to retain moisture and support healthy growth.
- Water: Consistent moisture is essential, particularly during the growing and blooming seasons. Avoid planting in dry or overly alkaline soils.
- Light: Full sun ensures the best flowering, but the plant tolerates partial shade, especially in warmer climates.
Hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, ‘Variegata’ is frost-tolerant and reliably returns year after year.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in late summer or early autumn after flowering. Replant divisions in moist, well-prepared soil to maintain vigor and encourage fresh growth.
- Seed: Sow seeds in autumn or early spring in a damp, well-drained medium. Seed propagation is less common but possible for those seeking unique variations.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture.
- Apply mulch annually to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil fertility.
- Cut back old foliage in late autumn to prepare the plant for winter dormancy.
- Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.
Uses
- Ornamental: The variegated foliage and striking blooms of Iris kaempferi ‘Variegata’ make it a perfect choice for water gardens, pond edges, and boggy areas, providing year-round interest.
- Foliage Focus: Even when not in bloom, the bold variegated leaves offer a dynamic visual element, making it a great addition to mixed plantings.
- Naturalized Planting: Ideal for naturalizing in damp, semi-shaded areas, creating a lush and colorful display.
- Cut Flowers: The large, dramatic blooms are excellent for cutting and bring sophistication to floral arrangements.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, providing a valuable nectar source during the blooming season.
- Erosion Control: The dense foliage and root system help stabilize soil in wet areas, reducing erosion and improving water quality.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is critical for optimal growth and flowering. Ensure the soil stays wet during the growing season.
- Light Requirements: Full sun promotes the best flowering, though partial shade is acceptable in hot climates.
- Division: Regular division every few years prevents overcrowding and maintains plant health and vigor.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
