Equisetum Fluviatile
Equisetum fluviatile, commonly known as Water Horsetail or Swamp Horsetail, is a perennial, herbaceous plant in the Equisetaceae family. This ancient plant, which dates back to prehistoric times, is native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including North America, Europe, and Asia. It thrives in wet environments such as marshes, swamps, pond margins, and slow-moving streams, making it an excellent choice for water gardens and naturalized wetland areas.
Water Horsetail typically grows to a height of 2 to 4 feet, with a spread of about 1 to 2 feet. The plant features hollow, jointed stems that are green and segmented, with each segment encircled by a band of tiny, scale-like leaves. These leaves are reduced to a sheath around the stem, which is a characteristic feature of horsetails. The stems are slender, smooth, and can grow in dense clumps, forming a striking vertical element in the landscape.
One of the distinctive features of Equisetum fluviatile is its ability to spread through rhizomes. The plants underground rhizomes can extend and form extensive colonies, helping to stabilize soil and prevent erosion in wetland areas. The plants rhizomes also enable it to survive in fluctuating water levels, making it highly adaptable to different aquatic environments.
Equisetum fluviatile prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in consistently moist to wet soils.
Caring for Water Horsetail is relatively low-maintenance. The plant requires regular watering to maintain its preferred moist conditions, especially during dry periods.
Overall, Equisetum fluviatile is a versatile and attractive plant that enhances the beauty and ecological health of water gardens and wetland areas. Its distinctive, jointed stems and ease of care make it a valuable addition to gardens focused on aquatic and marginal plants, providing both aesthetic appeal and habitat for wildlife.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
