Key Points
Carex grayi, commonly known as Mace Sedge or Morning Star Sedge, is an eye-catching, clump-forming perennial sedge native to wetlands and moist habitats in eastern North America. It is particularly prized for its unique, mace-like seed heads that add ornamental interest to gardens, especially in wet areas.
This sedge grows to a height of 50–90 cm (20–36 inches) and forms dense clumps of arching, strap-like leaves that are bright green and slightly glossy. The foliage provides a bold, grassy texture that adds structure and movement to garden designs.
Flowering from late spring to early summer, Carex grayi produces inconspicuous flowers followed by its signature seed heads, which resemble spiked maces or starbursts. These green seed heads gradually mature to brown in late summer and persist into winter, offering visual interest even in the colder months. They are also often used in dried floral arrangements.
Mace Sedge thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist to wet soil, making it ideal for planting along pond margins, in rain gardens, or in damp woodland settings. It tolerates occasional standing water and performs well in loamy, clay, or organic-rich soils. Fully hardy in UK conditions, it can withstand frost and cooler climates.
Propagation is typically achieved by division in spring or autumn or by sowing seeds. Once established, Carex grayi is low-maintenance and requires minimal care, although it may benefit from occasional thinning to prevent overcrowding.
In addition to its ornamental qualities, Carex grayi supports wetland ecosystems by providing habitat and food for wildlife. Its dense foliage offers cover for small animals, while the seed heads attract birds and other creatures. Its robust root system also helps stabilise soil and manage water runoff in wet areas.
With its distinctive seed heads, graceful foliage, and adaptability to wet conditions, Carex grayi is an excellent choice for naturalistic planting schemes, water gardens, and any setting where unique and structural plants are desired.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
