Key Points
Cyperus alternifolius 'Gracilis', commonly known as the Umbrella Palm 'Gracilis', is a compact and refined variety of the classic Cyperus alternifolius. This elegant aquatic or semi-aquatic perennial is highly valued for its slender stems and smaller stature, making it ideal for smaller ponds, water gardens, and container displays.
Growing to a height of 40–70 cm (16–28 inches), Gracilis is more compact than the typical species, while retaining the signature umbrella-like whorls of narrow, arching leaf bracts that define the plant. Its delicate form and reduced size make it particularly suited to smaller garden spaces or as an accent plant in mixed water planting schemes.
During the summer months, the plant produces small, understated flowers at the base of its leaf bracts. These flowers are followed by tiny seed heads, adding a subtle, textural interest to the plant's already striking silhouette.
Umbrella Palm 'Gracilis' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist or waterlogged soil, making it suitable for the margins of ponds, shallow water up to 10 cm (4 inches), or as a container-grown feature plant in a water-filled saucer. It grows best in rich, loamy soil but adapts well to a variety of substrates. Hardy in mild climates, it may require winter protection in colder regions of the UK, where it can be overwintered indoors or in a frost-free conservatory.
Propagation is straightforward and is typically achieved through division in spring or summer. The plant is fast-growing and relatively low-maintenance, requiring only regular watering and occasional thinning to keep its growth in check.
In addition to its ornamental appeal, Cyperus alternifolius 'Gracilis' is an excellent choice for improving water quality in ponds by oxygenating the water and filtering excess nutrients. Its compact size and tidy growth habit make it particularly popular for indoor water gardens and decorative containers.
With its elegant, understated form, adaptability, and smaller size, Cyperus alternifolius 'Gracilis' is a versatile and visually appealing plant for adding height, texture, and architectural interest to water features, containers, and damp garden settings.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
