Key Points
Cyperus longus, commonly known as Sweet Galingale, is an elegant perennial sedge native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. This versatile plant is well-suited for wetland areas, pond margins, and water meadows, where its graceful foliage and aromatic rhizomes contribute both aesthetic and ecological value.
The plant grows to a height of 60–120 cm (2–4 feet) and forms dense clumps of slender, upright stems surrounded by narrow, arching, bright green leaves. The leaves are linear and smooth, giving the plant a clean and refined appearance. Its rhizomatous growth habit allows it to spread gradually, stabilising soil and creating lush green patches in damp areas.
In summer, Cyperus longus produces clusters of small, reddish-brown flower spikes held on triangular stems above the foliage. While not particularly showy, these flower clusters add subtle texture and are followed by small seeds, which are valuable for wildlife.
Sweet Galingale thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist or waterlogged soil. It is ideal for planting along pond edges, in marshy areas, or in bog gardens. It can tolerate occasional standing water, making it a great choice for naturalistic water features. Hardy in UK conditions, it withstands frost and performs well in a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy substrates.
Propagation is typically achieved by division in spring or autumn or by sowing seeds. The plant is relatively low-maintenance once established, requiring little care apart from ensuring adequate moisture and occasional thinning if it becomes overly vigorous.
Historically, Cyperus longus has been valued for its sweet-smelling rhizomes, which were used in traditional medicine for their aromatic and purported medicinal properties. While it is less commonly used today, its cultural significance adds to its charm.
Ecologically, Sweet Galingale plays an important role in wetland habitats, providing cover for small animals and insects, stabilising soil, and filtering water. Its dense growth can also help manage erosion along water margins.
With its upright habit, attractive foliage, and adaptability to wet conditions, Cyperus longus is an excellent choice for enhancing the structure and biodiversity of wetland and aquatic gardens, adding both beauty and functionality to the landscape.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
