Key Points
Epipactis palustris, commonly known as the Marsh Helleborine, is a delicate and elegant terrestrial orchid native to wetland habitats across Europe and parts of Asia. It is highly prized for its intricate flowers, which add a touch of exotic beauty to damp meadows, fens, and bog gardens.
This deciduous orchid typically grows to a height of 20–60 cm (8–24 inches), producing slender, arching stems that bear narrow, lance-shaped green leaves arranged alternately along the stem. The leaves taper gracefully, complementing the plant’s overall form and providing an attractive backdrop for its floral display.
Flowering occurs in midsummer, usually between June and August. The Marsh Helleborine produces multiple flowers on each stem, arranged in loose racemes. Each flower is a masterpiece of natural design, with pale pink to reddish sepals, white petals, and a distinctive lip marked with intricate patterns of pink, purple, and yellow. The flowers are slightly fragrant and attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and other insects.
Epipactis palustris thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires moist, calcareous soils rich in organic matter. It is commonly found in marshes, wet meadows, and fenlands but can be cultivated successfully in garden settings with similar conditions. Hardy in UK climates, it tolerates frost and can establish well in temperate regions when provided with the right environment.
Propagation is challenging due to the plant's reliance on specific soil fungi for germination. Cultivating this orchid from seed typically requires laboratory conditions. However, division of established clumps in early autumn is a more practical option for propagation in garden settings.
Ecologically, the Marsh Helleborine plays an important role in supporting pollinators, and its presence is often an indicator of a healthy wetland ecosystem. Its unique flowers contribute to the biodiversity and visual appeal of naturalistic landscapes.
With its delicate beauty, intriguing flowers, and ability to thrive in wetland habitats, Epipactis palustris is an exceptional choice for enhancing bog gardens, naturalised meadows, and water features. Its rarity and ecological value make it a highly desirable plant for conservation-focused gardeners and wetland restoration projects.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
