Key Points
Geum rivale, commonly known as Water Avens, is a charming herbaceous perennial wildflower that thrives in damp meadows, stream edges, and wet woodland areas. Native to Europe, Asia, and parts of North America, it is a versatile plant valued for its delicate nodding flowers and adaptability to moist conditions.
This clump-forming perennial grows to a height of 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) and features softly hairy, divided leaves that form a basal rosette. The leaves are green and often lobed, providing an attractive texture even when the plant is not in bloom.
Flowering occurs from late spring to early summer. The nodding, bell-shaped flowers of Geum rivale are held on slender, branching stems. Each flower has five pinkish-purple sepals and five smaller, dusky pink to pale orange petals, giving them a soft and understated beauty. The flowers are also notable for their long, arching stamens, which add to their intricate appearance. Once pollinated, the flowers develop into attractive seed heads that persist into late summer, adding additional interest.
Water Avens thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, fertile soils. It is especially well-suited for planting near ponds, streams, or in bog gardens, where the soil remains damp throughout the growing season. Hardy in UK conditions, it tolerates frost and cooler temperatures, making it a reliable choice for temperate climates.
Propagation is achieved through division of clumps in early spring or autumn, or by sowing seeds. Once established, the plant is low-maintenance, requiring little more than regular watering during dry periods to maintain its lush growth.
Ecologically, Geum rivale is valuable for supporting pollinators such as bees and butterflies, which are attracted to its nectar-rich flowers. It also contributes to the biodiversity of wetland habitats, making it a key component of naturalistic planting schemes.
With its graceful nodding flowers, attractive foliage, and ability to thrive in damp environments, Geum rivale is an excellent choice for enhancing the beauty and ecological value of wetland gardens, wildflower meadows, and woodland edges. Its subtle elegance and adaptability make it a favourite for naturalistic landscapes and biodiversity-focused gardens.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
