Salvia Microphylla Hot Lips
Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips' is a popular cultivar of the Salvia microphylla species, commonly known as baby sage or Graham's sage. It is a compact, evergreen shrub native to Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States. Here's a description of the plant:
- Appearance : 'Hot Lips' is a compact shrub that typically grows to about 2-3 feet in height and width, though it can vary depending on growing conditions. The foliage is small and oval-shaped, with a dark green color that provides a nice backdrop to the vibrant flowers.
- Flowers : The most distinctive feature of 'Hot Lips' is its flowers. The blooms are small, tubular, and arranged in clusters at the tips of the stems. What makes 'Hot Lips' unique is the coloration of its flowers. They start off white and gradually develop into a fiery red as they mature, creating a striking bi-color effect. Occasionally, you may even find flowers with both red and white petals on the same plant, adding further visual interest.
- Blooming Season : This cultivar typically blooms from late spring through fall, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies with its abundant nectar.
- Sun and Soil Requirements : Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-draining soil. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping or low-water gardens. However, consistent moisture during the growing season can promote better flower production.
- Maintenance : 'Hot Lips' is relatively low-maintenance and easy to grow. Regular deadheading (removing spent flowers) can help prolong the blooming period and maintain a tidy appearance. Pruning can be done in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged growth.
- Uses : This cultivar is versatile and can be used in various garden settings. It works well as a border plant, in mixed herbaceous borders, or in containers. The bright flowers also make it an excellent choice for attracting pollinators to the garden.
Overall, Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips' is a charming and eye-catching plant that adds a splash of color to any garden with its unique bi-color flowers and compact growth habit.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
