Growing Conditions
Astilbe 'Red Baron' thrives in consistently moist, fertile soils and shaded to partially sunny locations.
- Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained soil that retains moisture. Adding organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure enhances fertility and moisture retention.
- Water: Requires consistent watering, especially during dry periods, to maintain soil moisture. It is ideal for damp areas, such as pond edges or bog gardens.
- Light: Grows best in partial to full shade but can tolerate full sun if the soil is kept consistently moist.
This perennial is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or autumn to maintain plant vigor and control size. Replant divisions in prepared, moist soil.
- Seed: While possible, propagation from seed is less common and more challenging. Division is the preferred method.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly, especially during dry or hot weather, to prevent wilting.
- Apply mulch around the base annually to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil fertility.
- Deadhead spent flowers to extend the blooming period and maintain a tidy appearance.
- Cut back foliage to ground level in late autumn to prepare the plant for winter dormancy.
Uses
- Ornamental Borders: The bold red blooms and textured foliage of 'Red Baron' make it a standout feature in shady or partially shaded borders.
- Woodland Gardens: Thrives in the dappled light and moist soil conditions of woodland settings, adding vibrant color and texture.
- Water Gardens: Perfect for planting near ponds, streams, or in boggy areas where it thrives in consistently moist conditions.
- Cut Flowers: The long-lasting flowers are excellent for cutting, adding a splash of red to fresh floral arrangements.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, supporting biodiversity during the summer months.
- Wildlife Habitat: The dense foliage offers shelter for small insects and creatures in naturalized garden settings.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistent soil moisture is essential for healthy growth and flowering. The plant may struggle in dry or sandy soils.
- Light Requirements: While it tolerates full sun in cooler climates, partial to full shade is recommended in warmer regions to prevent stress from excessive heat.
- Division: Regular division ensures the plant remains vigorous and prevents overcrowding.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
