Key Points
Astilbe ‘Straussenfeder’, commonly known as Astilbe Salmon Pink or Ostrich Feather Astilbe, is a striking herbaceous perennial celebrated for its tall, arching plumes of salmon-pink flowers and elegant, fern-like foliage. This robust plant thrives in moist, shaded areas, bringing a touch of grace and colour to woodland gardens, borders, and water features.
Description
Astilbe ‘Straussenfeder’ grows to a height of 90–120 cm (36–48 inches) with a spread of 45–60 cm (18–24 inches). It forms a dense clump of finely divided, dark green leaves, providing lush texture throughout the growing season.
In mid to late summer (July to August), tall stems rise above the foliage, bearing large, arching plumes of soft salmon-pink flowers. These feathery blooms sway gently in the breeze, creating a dynamic and elegant display in shaded garden areas.
Growing Conditions
Astilbe ‘Straussenfeder’ thrives in partial shade to full shade and prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. It performs best in fertile, humus-rich soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. While it tolerates some sunlight in cooler climates, excessive direct sunlight can stress the plant or scorch its leaves.
This variety is hardy in the UK, tolerating frost and returning reliably each year, making it a dependable choice for temperate gardens.
Propagation and Care
Astilbe ‘Straussenfeder’ is propagated by division:
- Division: Divide mature clumps in spring or autumn, ensuring each division has healthy roots and buds. Replant the divisions in prepared soil at the same depth.
- Spacing: Allow 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) between plants to accommodate their mature size and promote airflow.
Routine care includes:
- Watering regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry spells.
- Mulching annually to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and enrich the soil.
- Cutting back spent flower stems and foliage in autumn to tidy the plant and prepare it for winter dormancy.
Uses
Ornamental:
Astilbe ‘Straussenfeder’ is a standout addition to shaded borders, woodland gardens, and water features. Its tall, arching blooms add vertical interest and pair beautifully with shade-loving plants like Hostas, Ferns, and Heucheras.
Mass Planting:
This variety creates a striking visual impact when planted in groups, offering a cohesive and elegant look in naturalistic or formal garden designs.
Cut Flowers:
The feathery, salmon-pink blooms are excellent for fresh or dried floral arrangements, adding height, texture, and a warm colour palette.
Ecological Value
Astilbe ‘Straussenfeder’ attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies, offering a valuable nectar source. Its dense foliage provides shelter for small insects, enhancing biodiversity in shaded areas.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is essential for healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out.
- Frost Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK, requiring no special winter protection.
- Size Management: Due to its tall growth, this variety may benefit from division every few years to maintain vigour.
Summary

Perfect for shaded, moist areas, it adds vertical interest, colour, and ecological value to woodland gardens, borders, and water features. Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
