Growing Conditions
Athyrium niponicum 'Ursula's Red' thrives in partial shade to full shade and prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soils and is tolerant of various garden conditions, provided the soil remains evenly moist.
Hardy in the UK, this fern tolerates frost and thrives in temperate climates, making it a reliable choice for shaded garden areas.
Propagation and Care
Athyrium niponicum 'Ursula's Red' is propagated by division:
- Division: In early spring, divide mature clumps, ensuring each division includes healthy roots and growing points. Replant the divisions immediately in prepared soil.
- Spacing: Allow 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) between plants to accommodate their spreading habit and ensure good airflow.
Routine care includes:
- Keeping the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells.
- Applying a layer of mulch annually to retain moisture, enrich the soil, and suppress weeds.
- Removing old or damaged fronds in late autumn or early spring to maintain a tidy appearance.
Uses
Ornamental:
Athyrium niponicum 'Ursula's Red' is ideal for shaded borders, woodland gardens, and rock gardens. Its vibrant, colourful fronds pair beautifully with shade-loving plants such as Hostas, Heucheras, and other ferns.

Ecological Value
Athyrium niponicum 'Ursula's Red' enhances garden biodiversity by providing shelter for small insects and creating a microhabitat in shaded areas. Its foliage helps retain soil moisture and improves the overall health of shaded ecosystems.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
At Lincs Plants, we operate from two main locations. When you place an order, we prepare and pack plants across both sites depending on what you’ve ordered.
