Key Points
Butomus umbellatus 'Schneeweißchen'
Butomus umbellatus 'Schneeweißchen', commonly known as Flowering Rush 'Schneeweißchen', is an elegant aquatic perennial that adds a refined beauty to ponds, streams, and other water features. This cultivated variety of the Flowering Rush is prized for its distinctive white flowers and graceful, upright foliage.
A deciduous plant, Butomus umbellatus 'Schneeweißchen' forms dense clumps of narrow, arching, grass-like leaves that grow up to 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) tall. These leaves create a striking vertical element in wetland and aquatic gardens, particularly during the growing season. The plant is fully hardy in UK conditions and thrives in water depths of 5–25 cm (2–10 inches), making it ideal for the margins of ponds or shallow waterways.
In summer, this variety produces striking clusters of pure white, star-shaped flowers held on tall, sturdy stems that rise above the foliage. The flowers, which appear in umbels, are lightly fragrant and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. This floral display lasts for several weeks, providing a serene and elegant touch to aquatic landscapes.
Native to Eurasia, Butomus umbellatus thrives in full sun and performs best in loamy or clay soils submerged or consistently moist. The 'Schneeweißchen' cultivar is well-suited for ornamental planting schemes, offering both structure and delicate floral beauty to complement a variety of water plants.
Propagation is typically achieved through division in spring or autumn, and once established, this plant is relatively low-maintenance. Its ability to stabilise soil and enhance biodiversity makes it not only a visual asset but also a functional addition to water gardens.
Whether used as a focal point in a pond or integrated into a naturalistic planting scheme, Butomus umbellatus 'Schneeweißchen' brings a timeless elegance to any aquatic setting.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
