Caltha palustris - Marsh Marigold (Kingcup), Native Pond Marginal Plant

Caltha palustris, known as marsh marigold or kingcup, is a UK native marginal plant with rounded, rich dark green leaves and waxy, golden-yellow flowers about 4 cm across. It is one of the first pond plants to flower each year, usually from March to May.

Is marsh marigold good for wildlife?

Yes. It is on the RHS Plants for Pollinators list, and its early flowers give insects nectar when little else is in bloom. The Wildlife Trusts note that the leaves give frogs shelter at the water's edge.

How to plant and care for it

Plant in an aquatic basket in spring or summer and stand it so there is no more than 10 cm of water over the crown. Keep the soil wet all year. Cutting back the old foliage after flowering can encourage a second, smaller flush in autumn.

Is marsh marigold poisonous?

Yes, if eaten raw, and the sap can irritate skin, so wear gloves when dividing it. It is also harmful to grazing animals such as cattle and horses.
