Cyrtomium falcatum - 2026

Cyrtomium falcatum, commonly known as the Japanese Holly Fern, is an elegant evergreen fern native to East Asia. This fern is particularly valued for its glossy, dark green fronds that resemble holly leaves, giving it a distinctive appearance. It typically grows to a height of 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) and spreads 60–90 cm (24–36 inches), forming a dense, upright clump. The leathery, pinnate fronds are composed of broadly sickle-shaped leaflets, adding a bold texture to shaded garden spots.

Preferring moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil, Cyrtomium falcatum thrives in partial to full shade. It is relatively low-maintenance, being deer-resistant and tolerant of a range of soil types, provided they are kept consistently moist. This fern is hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C.
