Hosta 'Wheaton Blue' - 2026

Hosta ‘Wheaton Blue’ is a large, fast-growing perennial prized for its broad, thick foliage with a striking blue-green colour. The leaves are heart-shaped, heavy in substance, and develop a pleasantly puckered or seersuckered texture as they mature. In midsummer it bears pale lavender flowers that rise above the foliage on upright scapes, adding seasonal interest without overwhelming the foliage mass. This cultivar is a sport of Hosta ‘Paul’s Glory,’ selected for its stronger blue tone and excellent performance. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils, preferring partial shade, though it tolerates brighter shade; exposure to full sun often dulls the blue sheen.

Beyond its ornamental beauty, ‘Wheaton Blue’ is ecologically beneficial: its large leaves provide habitat and cover for small garden wildlife, and the flowers attract pollinators. Its robust leaf substance gives better resistance to slug and snail damage compared to thinner-leaved varieties. Mature plants form impressive clumps, making them ideal for borders, woodland gardens, or as specimen plants.
