Growing Conditions
Lythrum salicaria ‘Robert’ is easy to grow and thrives in moist or wet soils, making it an excellent choice for water-rich environments.
- Soil: Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil. It thrives in clay, loam, or sandy soils that retain moisture, but it can also tolerate wet, boggy areas.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil, especially during the growing season. It is well-suited for planting near ponds, streams, or other water features.
- Light: Thrives in full sun for optimal flowering but can tolerate partial shade.
Hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, ‘Robert’ is frost-tolerant and reliably returns year after year.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or autumn to maintain plant vigor and encourage new growth.
- Seed: Sow seeds in autumn or early spring in a moist, well-drained medium. However, division is preferred to maintain the compact growth habit of the cultivar.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to ensure consistent moisture, particularly in dry periods.
- Deadhead spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming and prevent self-seeding.
- Cut back stems to ground level in late autumn or early spring to prepare the plant for the next growing season.
- Apply mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and enrich the soil.
Uses
- Ornamental: The compact size and vibrant blooms of ‘Robert’ make it ideal for adding color and structure to borders, pond edges, and bog gardens.
- Water Gardens: Thrives in damp, water-rich areas, making it perfect for planting near ponds, streams, or in rain gardens.
- Naturalized Planting: Suitable for naturalizing in wet meadows or along waterways, creating a stunning and colorful display.
- Cut Flowers: The tall, colorful flower spikes are excellent for cutting and add vibrancy to floral arrangements.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, supporting biodiversity during the summer months.
- Wildlife Habitat: Provides shelter for insects and small creatures in damp, naturalized settings.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Consistently moist soil is essential for optimal growth and flowering. While tolerant of occasional dryness, regular watering is recommended, especially during dry spells.
- Invasiveness: Unlike its wild counterparts, ‘Robert’ is a compact, non-invasive cultivar, making it a safe choice for gardens without concerns about spreading.
- Light Requirements: While full sun is preferred for maximum flowering, the plant will tolerate partial shade, though blooms may be slightly reduced.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
