Key Points
Malus 'Sylvestris,' commonly known as the Wild Crab Apple or Malus Sylvester, is a deciduous tree often utilized for hedging, offering both ornamental beauty and practical benefits. Here's a concise overview:
Appearance and Hedging:
Malus Sylvester is celebrated for its attractive appearance and suitability for hedging. The tree features a rounded crown with dark green leaves, providing a lush backdrop. During spring, it produces fragrant white or pink blossoms, creating a visually enchanting display. The small, tart apples that follow add an additional element of interest.
Fruit:
The crab apples of Malus Sylvester are typically small and sour, making them less palatable for fresh consumption but ideal for culinary uses. They are often used to make jams, jellies, and preserves, contributing to the tree's practicality beyond ornamental value.
Growing Conditions:
Malus Sylvester thrives in well-drained soil and prefers a sunny to partially shaded location. It is relatively hardy and adaptable to different soil types, making it suitable for various garden settings. Regular pruning helps maintain the desired hedge shape and encourages robust growth.
Wildlife Attraction:
The crab apples produced by Malus Sylvester are attractive to wildlife, including birds. This makes the tree a valuable addition to hedgerows, providing food for local fauna and enhancing biodiversity.
Seasonal Interest:
Beyond its practical uses, Malus Sylvester offers seasonal interest throughout the year. From the vibrant spring blossoms to the small, colorful apples in autumn, the tree adds dynamic visual appeal to outdoor spaces.
Conclusion:
Malus Sylvester crab apple hedging combines aesthetic charm with practical benefits. The tree's rounded crown, fragrant blossoms, and small crab apples make it an attractive choice for creating visual interest in hedgerows. Beyond its ornamental value, the crab apples contribute to culinary endeavors and provide sustenance for wildlife, showcasing the versatility of this deciduous tree in garden and landscape design.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
At Lincs Plants, we operate from two main locations. When you place an order, we prepare and pack plants across both sites depending on what you’ve ordered.
