A dramatic hardy waterlily with very dark, rich burgundy-red blooms that appear almost black in certain light. Flowers are star-shaped, 12–15 cm across, and produced freely from June to September, sitting just above the water. Leaves are green, flushed with purple when young, up to 20–25 cm wide, with a spread of about 1–1.2 m. Best in 30–60 cm of water and full sun, it is an outstanding choice for medium ponds, prized for its intense, near-black flowers.
