Key Points
Petasites japonicus var. giganteus (Giant Japanese Butterbur)
Petasites japonicus var. giganteus, commonly known as Giant Japanese Butterbur, is an impressive moisture-loving perennial known for its enormous, umbrella-like leaves and early-season flower spikes. This bold and architectural plant is ideal for bog gardens, pond edges, and damp woodlands, creating a lush and dramatic focal point.
Description
- Height: 120–180 cm (48–72 inches)
- Spread: 150–300 cm (60–120 inches)
- Foliage: The massive, rounded, heart-shaped leaves can reach 1 meter (3 feet) across, with deeply lobed edges and a thick, textured surface. The leaves emerge in spring and remain lush and green throughout the growing season, creating a dramatic, jungle-like effect.
- Flowers: Before the foliage appears, clusters of pale yellow-green to cream-colored flowers bloom on stout, fleshy stems in early spring (February to April). These blooms are attractive to early-season pollinators.
- Growth Habit: Spreading rapidly via underground rhizomes, Petasites japonicus var. giganteus forms large colonies in favorable conditions, making it an effective ground cover for large, damp areas.
Growing Conditions
Petasites japonicus var. giganteus thrives in consistently moist or wet environments and is best suited to spacious gardens.
- Soil: Prefers rich, moisture-retentive soil, such as loamy or clay soils. It thrives in boggy or waterlogged conditions but does not tolerate prolonged dry spells.
- Water: Requires consistent moisture and flourishes in damp environments, such as pond margins, stream banks, or bog gardens.
- Light: Grows best in partial shade but tolerates full sun in cooler climates if soil moisture is maintained. In hot climates, afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch.
This plant is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Propagate by dividing rhizomes in early spring or autumn. Replant divisions in moist, prepared soil.
- Seed: Can be grown from seed, but rhizome division is faster and more reliable.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain soil moisture, especially in dry weather.
- Apply a thick mulch annually in early spring to retain moisture and enrich the soil.
- Cut back foliage in late autumn or early spring to promote fresh growth.
- Monitor spread, as Petasites japonicus var. giganteus can be highly vigorous and invasive in optimal conditions. Contain growth using barriers or remove excess rhizomes if necessary.
Uses
- Water Gardens: Perfect for planting near ponds, streams, or bog gardens, where its love for moisture is fully met.
- Architectural Planting: The massive foliage creates a bold, tropical effect in garden landscapes.
- Erosion Control: The extensive root system helps stabilize soil along riverbanks and wet slopes.
- Ground Cover: Forms dense colonies that effectively suppress weeds in damp areas.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The early flowers attract bees and other pollinators when few other plants are in bloom.
- Wildlife Habitat: Provides shelter for insects, amphibians, and small creatures in moist, shaded environments.
- Erosion Control: The fast-growing rhizomes help stabilize wet soils and reduce runoff.
Considerations
- Invasiveness: Petasites japonicus var. giganteus spreads aggressively via rhizomes and may require control measures to prevent excessive spread.
- Moisture Needs: Requires consistently wet soil and is unsuitable for dry or well-drained areas.
- Space Requirements: Due to its large size and spreading habit, it is best suited for expansive gardens rather than small borders.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
