Key Points
Polygonatum commutatum (giganteum) is an imposing perennial sometimes called giant Solomon’s Seal, notable for its graceful arching stems and glossy oval leaves. In late spring to early summer it produces clusters of tubular white-green flowers that hang below each paired leaf. After flowering the blooms are followed by small dark berries. The foliage dies back in autumn and re-emerges in spring. This plant brings strong architectural presence to shady or woodland gardens, particularly under trees or in borders where it has space to arch and spread.
It prefers rich, humus-rich soil that is moist but well-drained, and thrives in partial to full shade. Once established it is hardier and low maintenance, with natural spread via rhizomes. Although its height is impressive, it remains elegant if given woodland conditions rather than full sun exposure.
