Roscoea purpurea 'Peacock' - 2026

Roscoea purpurea 'Peacock' is a compact, tuberous perennial with upright, strap-shaped green leaves that clasp the stem. In mid to late summer it bears light purple, orchid-like flowers with crinkled lips above the foliage, creating a graceful display ideal for borders, cottage gardens or shaded, moist beds. Its moderate habit makes it suitable for containers or tucked into mixed plantings where moisture can be reliably supplied. It attracts insects such as bees and adds exotic interest without demanding full sun or dry soil.

It thrives in partial shade in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Low-maintenance once established; plant the tubers about 15 cm deep in winter or early spring, mulch well in winter in colder areas and deadhead spent flowers to tidy. Non-native to the UK, but fully hardy in many parts and valued for its summer bloom and distinctive flower form.
