Saponaria ocymoides - 2026

Saponaria ocymoides is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial that creates dense, evergreen carpets of aromatic, grey-green foliage topped by a profusion of bright pink, slightly fragrant flowers from late spring into summer. The blooms sit on short stems above the foliage, producing a long-lasting, eye-catching display that spills attractively over rock walls, steps and gravel beds, or fills crevices in rock gardens. Its compact habit and neat evergreen cover make it an excellent choice for edging, alpine borders and container displays.

Hardy and drought-tolerant once established, Saponaria ocymoides prefers a sunny, well-drained position and thrives in poor or stony soils where many other plants struggle. It requires minimal maintenance beyond light trimming after flowering to renew the mat and occasional division to rejuvenate older clumps.
